PerhentianIslands lay approximately 23 km offshore the east-coast peninsular Malaysia. The two main islands are Perhentian Besar ("Big Perhentian") and Perhentian Kecil ("Small Perhentian"). The Perhentians are officially declared as marine park in 1991 which mean that fishing, collecting coral and littering are strictly prohibited. Both islands are fringed by white sandy beaches, the reefs and crystalline water are host to a wide variety of corals, sea-turtles, reef sharks and reef-fish.
Marine park is an area of the sea protected by law, they are established to protect, conserve and manage important marine ecosystems, particularly coral reefs. The waters around the Perhentian Islands were declared as Marine park under Malaysian Law in 1991. The protected waters extend 2 nautical miles from the shore. As a protected area, certain activities are prohibited within the boundaries of the park. violation can result in heavy fines.
